Most of the complexity here comes from the range of units and weapons, and you'll need to think carefully about your engagements, but adding to the depth is the need to consider things like resource management as you need to keep your units supplied.
This might be an old-school strategy game lacking in visual flash but it more than makes up for this with its intense and absorbing gameplay. The interface is pretty easy to pick up, while the campaigns are varied and challenging, and will really test even armchair veterans, especially when playing as the Russians. There are minor annoyances in that certain tactics never seem to work but on the whole, this is a fine game.
Allied General borrows SSI's fantastic hexbased, wargaming engine that was used in Panzer General , but it changes the game up quite a bit, in terms of locations and missions. Also, the North African operations are included in a few missions as well, which adds to the diversity of the game. He game also packs a heftier amount of different types of units, from tanks, to on foot soldiers, to air and other ground weapons.
Graphically, while the mechanical bits are surely the ones of the Panzer General game, there are improvements. Troops hiding in the mountains or entrenched can inflict damage on ground troops attacking from a lower position. When you reach Benghazi in the first campaign, it is important to have graphics aren't what Allied General is about. SSI's Allied General brings the second game in the five-star series home.
If you are into strategy gaming, Allied General packs a lot of challenge, action and intrigue into an affordable package. Since Artillery does the most amount of damage, utilize it first in a battle. This will wear down the Axis' forces enough so that attacking with tanks and ground troops finishes them off or depletes them enough to not be a problem. The projected losses are not always correct.
In fact, you may take out more of your opponent's forces than originally predicted. When in a battle where your troops have been depleted to such a level that you may not be able to continue, use a turn to build them back up.
Buying Elite Replacements means that you don't have to decrease the experience level of your forces. Although it's more expensive than buying regular replacements, it's better in the end. It is unfortunate that SSI decided to port the game to Windows 95 platform, because it runs much slower, and the interface is much more cumbersome, than the DOS-based engine of Panzer General.
Crisper graphics and better sound effects make up for this weakness, though. This game is the sequel to "Panzer General" with a few enhancements that have occurred to Allied General to make it a little different from Panzer General. The main changes occur to the units and missions.
With these changes it gives enough change to the game to make it just as exciting as the first in the sequel. The game play is now on the ally side. You are playing alongside the Western Allies and the Soviet Forces. You do have the choice to play on teams other than The Brits, such as The United States or the Germans, which will give you a different point of action for each team you choice to play on.
